Mangalore: Teachers’ play pivotal role in promoting communal harmony - MLC Ivan

Mangalore, Sep 06, 2014  : ‘Teachers play pivotal role in promoting communal harmony in cities across the nation. It would be better, if Deputy Commissioners of different districts in India convene emergency meetings in cases of imminent threat to communal harmony, along with law enforcement agencies and politicians,’ said MLC Ivan D’Souza.

 

MLC Ivan was speaking during Teachers’ Day celebration organized by Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat and public instructions department at Town Hall here on Friday September 5.

MLC Ivan further said, ‘During the communal flare ups, those who are involved in the clashes don’t listen to the police or the politicians, but they will certainly listen to their teachers who taught them.’

 

MLC Ivan also said that there lies 6 lac vacancies for the post of teachers in Karnataka.

 

Mangalore south MLA J R Lobo, inn his presidential address said that India cannot sustain growth with agriculture alone. ‘Human resource is another important factor. For this, education is a must and the teachers have a big role to play in this regard,’ said MLA Lobo.

 

Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said, ‘Our country has a tradition of respecting teachers the most. To build a great nation, the contribution of teachers is a must; it is not possible by politicians alone. The present education system was introduced by Lord Macaulay. But the system has become commercial today and this has to stop,’ said MP Nalin.

The mayor Mahabala Marla said, ‘Today, we hear a lot of wrongdoings committed by teachers. This should not happen,’ said mayor Mahabala.

 

Over 53 retired teachers were felicitated on the same occasion.

 

 The retired teacher Raghav D and Milagres School retired headmaster Herald M Monteiro  also spoke on the occasion.

 

Raghav said, ‘We were only 3 teachers in the school and we had to manage from Class I to Class VII daily. Such problem exists even today,’ said Raghav.

 

Yakshagana show and cultural programmes were held as part of entertain programme.

 

Certificates were distributed to schools that secured 100 percent results in SSLC exams.

 

Vasudeva Rao and Raghav D were felicitated for receiving district Top Teachers Award during the programme.
