Mangalore, 27 Aug 2014: CM Siddaramaiah instructed fisheries department to award compensation to family of a fisherman Jagannat Karkera who was drowned in the sea while fishing in a gillnet boat 2 weeks ago. It was awarded on the basis of plea made by MLC Ivan D’Souza on behalf of grieving family.
MLC Ivan convinced CM Siddaramaiah about the economic hardship of Jagannat’s wife Vedavati and 2 daughters Spoorti and Meghana and the fisheries department refusing to award compensation on the grounds that the dead body of Jagannat was not traced.
MLC Ivan urged fisheries department officials to award the compensation at the earliest.
Jagannat was drowned when fishing boat capsized in sea on August 11, and his body was not traced despite the efforts of coastguard.
It’s the first time that the compensation was awarded without tracing the dead body of a fisherman. It’s because MLC Ivan persisted in seeking compensation by convincing the gravity of distressed family to CM Siddaramaiah.
