Mangalore: DSS stages protest seeking state facilities from civic body

Mangalore, 21 Aug 2014: Dalit Sangarsha Samiti (DSS) staged protest against civic body, in front of headquarter here on Thursday August 21, for curbing state benefits to Dalits.
Addressing the protesters, DSS district co-convener Anand Bellare said, ‘The civic body granted a few facilities for Dalits following the constitutional directives. The aid for house repairs, the scholarships for Dalit children, health facilities and many other facilities had served social justice to Dalits. Meanwhile, despite increase in funds available in annual budget, the civic body has not increased the quantum of benefits to Dalits,’ said Anand.
‘Instead of increasing aid, civic body curbed most of the facilities stating that it has been done to implement the state government’s directives. This has led to desperation among many poor families of the community,’ said Anand.
Anand urged the municipal commissioner in order to grant the hither to restricted benefits and regularize the services of civic workers who are temporarily working in civic duties.
‘The private persons are trying to encroach upon state administration allotted plot to build Ambedkar Bhavan. It has released the funds but the civic body has not shown any interest. Therefore, the municipal commissioner direct the concerned officials to take care of the land and start the construction of Ambedkar Bhavan at the earliest,’ said Anand.
The protesters raised slogans demanding the facilities that they deserve.
DSS leaders Ramesh Kotian, Ashok Konchady, Nirmal Kumar and others were present on the occasion.
