Mangalore: Session on ill effects of tobacco & alcohol held at Milagres College

Mangalore, Aug 16, 2014: Centre for Health and Development ® in association with Milagres Collge, organized a session on ill effects of tobacco and alcohol at Milagres PU College auditorium, here on Thursday August 14 at 2.30pm.
Milagres Collge principal Fr Francis X Gomes presided the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, Fr Gomes urged the students not to involve themselves in any addiction. He also appreciated the work of some of the organizations, Sri Kshetra Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) and other such NGOs who have taken initiative towards this tasks and thereby contributing for building up young and healthy society. He also shared his personal experience when he had visited European countries that how people around the world especially in western countries both boys and girls are very much involved in addiction like smoking and drinking.
The consultant psychiatrist who had done MD from NIMHANS was the chief guest, presented his thoughts in a PowerPoint presentation. He gave the instances of film actors who have involved themselves in advertisements and thereby giving wrong message to youth. He also highlighted the ill effects of alcohol and tobacco and also about physical and mental effect and thereby affects one’s personality. He said, as per the world cancer report of 2014, 22 percent of violence and suicide attempts are because of alcohol. Tobacco is alone responsible for 30 percent of deaths because of cancer. Nearly 50 percent of heart attacks in young age group of 30 years to 40 years are because of consumption of tobacco. Alcohol also causes impotence, decreases physical stamina, it also causes financial disaster and occupational impairment and work absenteeism etc are because of alcohol. It also creates a state of physical and psychological dependence and slavery.
Alcohol and tobacco act as a gateway to drugs. He also insisted some of the preventive measures through which the consumption of tobacco can be lessened, through the ban of advertisements, by raising the taxes and restrictions on the availability of tobacco and alcohol. Because alcohol is also responsible for domestic violence, thereby it will make children to develop anxiety and depression. It is also responsible for road accidents, behavioral problems, health hazards, work absenteeism etc.
