I have the good fortune to be married to Monica Mary, daughter of Lily D’sa, the eldest sister of Rev Fr Maurice D’souza, who incidentally conducted our marriage nuptials way back in Nov.,1983 at Don Bosco’s crypt Matunga, Mumbai. My first impression of him was his professionalism, his sense of pride in wearing the cassock, his excellent vocabulary, and his keen sense of humor. When we met him a few years later in Mangalore, his first question was “ Brian, how many big, really massive fights have you both had ? !!”
It is amazing that you know a person for 27 long years and yet reading the wonderful, in-depth, and comprehensive article by Dr. Eugene gave me more insight in ten minutes than I knew about Fr Maurice before. I have always admired his sturdy, powerful, lithe figure and now with hindsight realize that it is the physique of an athlete! Everyone knows about his simplicity, his dedication, his amazing administrative abilities, his humility, his ability to inspire and motivate people, his leadership qualities, his competence, his tenderness towards children, etc., etc., etc., but few know about his capacity to bring people together and meet however far apart they are. In Mumbai, family-members from the far flung Central and Western suburbs meet together, only when Fr Maurice arrives from the USA !!!!!!! A true testimony of the respect, regard and love, we all have for him.

In the recent history of belle parish both Fr. Rego and Fr. Lobo are done marvelous job for the upliftment of the churh as well as its institution, thus laid a strong foundation in the field of education. Fr. Rego was a highly intellectual and visionary priest and was a silent administator. Fr. Lobo was the revolutionay priest of Belle. He has totally changed the style of functioning of parish and brought the changes. And was very dynamic and produced many leaders. Though people were bit reluctant initially, later they realized the difference. He induced the self confidence with the leaders and showed the way for the distressed people.

Somewhat i too agree with Hemphil here. What congress has done to the country/state over 50 years of ruling? Congress just woke up when they got a feeling that coming of BJP into power might be the end of their chance to come to power in the state again? Every politician does what suits best to him, not the aam janta ...

Being related and having known Fr. Maurice for many years, the many facets of his life were hitherto knknown to me and many others are revealed in this article. Fr. Maurice is known to be a simple and hardworking priest, always smiling and compassionate. In spite of rising from position to position, he has been a very humble and down to earth personality. Hempil Dubai, I do not agree with your repeated comments on a particular political party people. Your comments may be applicable to other political parties too. Personal attack is not healthy in village level or any level. Why not followers of other political parties advice ICYM (if they have any). Prior to that it is very important to know whether young sacred organizations like ICYM need politicians advice!?

People are free to follow any political party. It is their personal choice! I feel there is nothing wrong in people participating in Congress rally. May be people are seeking a change of political leadership and coming out in large number. Do not get upset about it!

My personal opinion is –Do not use such forums and village for harvesting instigating political rivalry. This may culminate series of unhealthy events. Reason being, Citizens of Moodubelle are not sleepy, they are vibrant and intelligent. People of all political parties and all religions are leading a cordial and friendly life. People are compassionate. There are plenty daily and evening news papers and forums to create unrest professionally. I can say REv.Fr. Rego was a blessing to Belle. St Lawrence might have worked for his posting to Belle high school as Head master . he was Parish priest after Rev. Fr. abundius D souza, a right choice at that time. His mission and commitment to uplift the poor made Belle what it is today. We want priests of such commitment to service to the people. Fr Lobo further continued the mission and a Junior college at Belle was the necessity and it was his contribution.

Father D Souza has been paramount in my life. I am a life long Catholic who is in the Air Force and often have to pray that I can find a good confessor whenever I am relocated to other locations. I was blessed to find this holy priest who has administered three sacraments to me already, Confession, communion, and Unction of the Sick. Foremost, he represents the universality of our Church and its presence around the globe.
I often see the solemnity he displays during consacration and makes me think of the wonderful miracle happening before my eyes, that he can do with his hands what angels cannot, to turn bread and wine into Flesh and Blood of our Lord, and then I realize how important a priest is, and what a great blessing is to have good and dedicated priests that enrich our Church and remind us of Jesus in the Eucharist. It is a joy to know that God called this man and he acepted the mission anywhere it might take him, even if to the other end of the world to help others. I will never be able to reward father D Souza for all the good he has done for me, so I pray God and our Holy Mother to protect him and grant him the strenght to take Christ to others.

Indeed a fine write of late Mr Emmanuel D souza of Belle. Though he was known as Monnu Master, the priests were highly depending on him for the Administration of the Parish. He knew all details and procedures. He was also called The church Shenoy, auditoor and every thing in one personality. He , for his services, had been blessed immensly. God was with him and his family. He was very close to my Noronha family of Pambur because he used to visit us along with the Priests.His Sons-Arch Bishop Albert and Maurice D souza were our classmates at the Belle High School level. It was a great experience to associate with Monnu Master, after retirement occasionally he used to visit our home while passing through. A great soul who had contributed in innumeravble ways to serve in vineyard of the Lord.
Dr eugene it was providence that you should publish this in these columns for the information of the present generation. I thank you for a great job.
