Ragupthiji, be optimistic. Along with completing highway; why not other ambitious projects? Let us have monorail to ease traffic on growing city roads! I am thrilled about plans for Udupi. Hope it will be a reality. I am glad to note that corporators need to work for development without swindling money! In most cities of Karnataka corporators extract (extortion?) lakhs for allowing each slab of a building. As Subash Marne rightly pointed out-we need a local committee to oversee quality of road works and other projects!

To all readers who took time to comment and applaud.
Pope Francis showed that he possesses great qualities of heart. Humility, sincerity and honesty are not policies and grand-stand mannerisms. Fake and Pretenders get caught because people have an uncanny inner sense to feel and know from body language. No one is so great an actor in real world.
My only prayer today is Lord, keep him safe, secure, sound and healthy so that he can walk unwavering from the path he defined from the beginning. Shine on the way so he can see clearly and not stumble against the obstacles in the shadows.
I had hoped someone would come with a critical comment, constructive or destructive. So, I offer one myself. Latin America is not all about poverty, misery, crime, inequality of wealth, sex and drug mafia and warlords. It is beautiful continent with natural wonders, architectural masterpieces, art, literature, music, dance, food, fun, agriculture, industry and education. Its people are beautiful, kind and full of zest for life. They are normal people like all of us, similar emotions, feelings, struggles and aspirations.
It is a continent that I was blessed to visit and take a part of it with me.

Faith does move mountains, Eugene. Faith in Jesus, the Lord, I mean; which Pope Francis has in plenty.
The deep love and concern that he exhibited is shrewd pretense for his detractors, who will remain skeptics anyway. He has shifted the focus from supreme pontiff being a doctor of theology to a healer of hearts. That is a start which cannot stop. It has its momentum. And momentum is, as physicists know , works against friction. I expect to see a politics of different kind, what John XXIII and Pal VI unleashed on the world then mired in women s lib, Vietnam war, hippies, drugs, free sex and what not in developed world, cold war in first and second worlds, and crony capitalism or authoritarian communism in the third world.
There is a third way, a new way. The French said: nei Marx, nei Jesus. Papa Francisco says: Si, Jesus.
He has to live up and walk the talk carrying His cross.

Sandeep and Alphonse, this is for you.
My sister is pregnant.
That is great news. Gonna be uncle!
She is not married. Her boyfriend ran away.
OMG, that is terrible.
I will kill the b******d.
(silence)
I am in Campana listening to the miseries of a 19 year old college drop-out. Because, he can t afford private tuition. He works two jobs, a receptionist in the morning shift (paid) and a car parking valet in the evening (unpaid, living on tips).
I am saving enough for a plane ticket to Spain or Italy. Rome has jobs...my cousins from my maternal grandmother are there..I hope to find them, they will help me..
Now, Pope Francis will intercede with our Lord for Argentina and its poor. In fact, the whole world s poor.

Vivian, this is for you, my O-3 India Times style. She sat waiting pure like a lily, enticing like a cherry. The speeding cars on Buenos Aires Campana expressway slowed for a closer look. She stepped forward, smiled, and held up the best orange from her baskets, and sang. Hola, senor, hola senora, hola senorita.. you are only looking? cuanto cuesta? Una 1000 austral, si si, and then ciao, as they drove away.
To me, she came across an angel. Took me back to those days of my mother, santenth waiting with her basket of her cottage industry at our farm in Pamboor, not so pretty but determined woman. And courteous, to prospective customers.
Cuanto cuesta una caja? The girl blushed. She could not believe her luck. The entire basket? Si, si.
She wanted 20,000 and expectantly wondering if she asked too much.
I gave her a 5 USD, took the basket, gave her a you will not understand kinda smile and drove away. Ciao, she called after.
The taxi-man said: it is a bargain, back in Buenos Aires, will fetch 100,000 austral.
You keep it, it my tip you!

One suggestion though: At 70 plus, grant the couples exemption from gender segregation rules. Encourage aab-anni-ba to sit together at Holy Mass and Dukra-mass. (may them live to see next year and be side by side)

Hats off! to you Mudartha Sir, your brush-up with people with all walks of life which had helped you to come up with experiences of a life time being in the middle of all happenings around the world especially with various Christian congregations. Yes certain things have to change and should change for the betterment of the faithful. Very high hopes on Pope Francis and his papal ministry to come up with new methods of evangelization to help the poor, needy and those who are in daire-straight economically and spiritually as well. Catholicism has been losing ground in evangelical churches in Latin America in recent years. As we understand this was one of the reasons for Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio’s appointment as Pope Francis, along with a desire in the wider Catholic Church to reform the Vatican government. Really enjoyed reading your thought provoking and meaningful article and good luck for the next one!

Beautifully crafted article Mr.Philip, my mother (Tejju teacher), she too is from Pamboor admires you a lot for the guts and honesty. You have touched many subjects in the past and your honesty in writing reflects the life you live. I thank you for the hard work you put in to publish these fantastic articles for all of us to read and gain knowledge. many R.Catholics gone astray and joined many other groups and few started their own, I personally hold our religious leaders and church responsible as the main aim of sharing caring has been long forgotten, you have touched the most sensitive issues of the church, but it is the bitter truth we all know. hats off to your writing, which enticed me to read till the end and again to understand it completed. Yes Argentinians are religious too, hope the poor in the region will be uplifted during this Pope s presence. Thank you Philip sir for investing time for us by way your writing.

Wonderfully narrated experience of Philip kept me glued till the end. Even though cannot relate to this experiences in Latin America, have seen the struggles of slums in Bombay. As the divide between the rich and the poor is same irrespective of religion. This along with the changes that have happened over the years in Catholic Church made people look out for alternatives and form/join other groups. Philip, love your write ups and your ability to express truth how bitter it may be. Keep sharing your experiences.

This is the first time India has won 3 tests in a series since the 1994 Sri Lanka series at home. There is something about this new team which is different from previous ones. Pujara, Vijay, Dhoni, Dhawan, Kohli looked like they were hungry to win with their big hundreds and Bhuvneshwar Kumar Singh, Ashwin, Jadeja did a fantastic job with the ball. Well played India especially Man of the match Shikar Dhawan, great fight by Aussies also on the last day, Peter Siddle and Mitchell Starc bowled their heart out superb bowling. If India wins the fourth test, it would be something special. India has never won 4 tests in a series so Delhi test could be also exciting!!!

This is the best and timely article from Philip Mudartha. His experience in Mumbai slums have been a part and parcel of many 'have nots', among whom i consider myself as one. Hence, i can relate to everything that Philip has written in his article except the Latin American experience as i have not yet had the privilege of visiting the region as Philip did. However, i had studied about the political developments in Latin America as a MA student since 'Latin America' was an optional paper in MA History which i had offered and later taught to the post-graduate students. But the personal experience of Philip in Latin America surpasses any lesson of history. It is indeed a historic moment that we have a new pope, Francis from Argentina and his views are indeed revolutionary. Hope that he lives up to his own experience and examples. But i have a remote apprehension that the 'Shoes of the Fisherman' would bite the well-intentioned pope and might pull him back from the path of reform to the road of conservatism. God has given a pope to reform and maintain His Church. Bu who knows how far he will be successful? Hope to read many more such thought provoking articles from Philip in BV.

Dear Phillip,

Excellent article on real social issues haunt us from the beginning. yes, poor are always left to die where the rich enjoy every luxury. Yes there lot to be done to bring about big changes in our society and it can only happen if these long pending issues are brought out to the notice of those are in power , heads of state and the Religious heads. I am sure since the new Pope is from Argentina he will know the route cause of all problems, hunger and destitution. I hope and pray he will work more on these issues and also order its clergy to follow the path Jesus has taught... keep sharing... excellent reading and very knowledgeable.

Pope Francis is Pope of poor people and he cares them so much. Big revolution is essential in Roman Catholic church to enhance the faith god.
