Udupi, 03 Sep 2015: The Internet of Things (IOT) refers to the networking of physical objects through the use of embedded sensors, actuators, and other devices that can collect or transmit information about the objects. The data harvested from such devices can be analyzed to optimize products, services, and operations by automation.

Applications based on this emerging technology are increasingly being introduced in a number industries such as healthcare, smart home and office solutions, automobile, pharmaceuticals, electronic gadgets, retail, industrial automation, smart scientific products, education, agriculture, traffic management, gas and water supply system etc. For example, physicians can use the information collected from wireless sensors in their patient’s homes to improve their management of chronic diseases through continuous monitoring rather than periodic testing. By adopting IOT technology, physicians could reduce their treatment costs up to 20 percent benefiting the patients in terms of reducing the financial burden and can contribute effectively to the saving of lives.

Though the technology is still in its nascent stage, realizing its potential applications, the students of Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management (SMVITM), Bantakal near here have developed a few prototype models based on IOT which can benefit society and industries. For example, the Multifunctional Smart Fitness Band, developed by Nikhil Acharya and Parvez Jaffer explores the potential of the technology. The device offers a wide range of applications in the healthcare sector and is capable of measuring and monitoring several vital physical parameters such as heart rate, temperature, energy burnt etc. It not only measures such vital physical parameters but also keeps the record of the same and can even be shared with doctors in emergency cases. During the critical stages, as determined by the device, not only will it automatically send messages to emergency numbers but share the exact location of the person. When developed fully, the device can help solve the problems of patients suffering from diseases which require continuous monitoring.

E-bunch developed by Joyce Angel Jathanna, Hazel Vijeta D’Souza, Sahil Ali Tonse and Rahul B Sawant tracks valuable belongings with the GPS tracking assist technology. The device, which is like a key bunch, can be connected to pets, keys, wallets and jewelry and can be tracked in real time, using an application on the android device, to which it is connected.

Automotive Box-Dimension Finder, an IOT model developed by Shraddha S  Shetty, Shreeraksha Shetty, Shreya U Shetty and Veeksha U aims to simplify complex manufacturing operations, where systematic assembly and inspection are required, into simple step-by-step automated process. This task is usually done by humans some times in hazardous circumstances. In such circumstances, this type of dimension finder can reduce the risk and to help separate the boxes in the manufacturing unit. One area where the application can be proved useful will be logistics.

Chaya (Blending of colours) is a project aims to give a perfect lighting solution for office and home depending on the circumstances, situations and mood with just a touch. In addition to offering some such lighting solutions, the team of Kuldeep Rao, Swetha H, Shreeraj Bhat and Satwik S B also came up with Home Automation, a project that aims at connecting all the household devices via a network and can be monitored as well as controlled remotely by a smart phone installed with configured application. This project also gives better home and office security by sending the signal to local police in case of break-ins.

Smart Switch Boards, a project that allows one to control the TV, AC, refrigerator, fans, lights etc. through a smart phone designed by Pratheek Hegde, Rahul Kumar and Errol Pinto; Parking Automation project designed by Namdev Dinesh Nayak Jeppu, Narendra Kini, Senorita John and Anagha Bhat, which focuses on providing the real time information on the availability of parking slots to customers; Smart Soil Moisture Detector that  continuously monitors the soil moisture level and alerting the farmer about the need to water the crop; The Vehicle Efficiency Analysis and Service Time Prediction installed in a vehicle developed by Rayan Christ D’Souza and Shailesh Kumar monitors the condition of the vehicle and gives a message through the android application designed to monitor these sensors to the person concerned regarding the type of repair or service required. The mobile app will in turn provide the vehicle condition, efficiency, precautionary measures and tips for better maintenance of the vehicle. While Water Flow Controller, designed by Deepika Anchan and Suchetha Shenoy and Power Pump designed by Aishwarya, Ayisha Shetty, Deepthi C and Arpitha K focus on providing the automated solutions to Municipality water supply system, Smart Bin, a project by Shwetha and Praveenkumar Bayari aims to keep the city clean. The garbage bin in public places, if fitted with the model designed by them, it can monitor the bin and when it is full, can send a message to the maintenance/clean-up personnel to clear the same. If they are not clearing in a stipulated period, then a message will be sent to higher officials to bring it their notice. All these models and ideas were presented by the enthusiastic students of SMVITM, Bantakal on 15 August 2015, celebrating Independence Day in a unique and exemplary way!

A few more projects - which if effectively developed, could bring down the cost, time and human effort - are being worked on by the IOT teams of SMVITM, Bantakal and in all likelihood they will come up with gadgets and devices that harness the technology to its fullest. This budding institute is taking a lead role in disseminating IOT technology in the coastal region.
