Mangaluru, 25 May 2015: The one-year rule of Narendra Modi led NDA government has ensured that the major poll plank that includes ensuring internal security, defence preparedness and ensuring development is taken care of, noted Shobha Karandlaje, Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP. The government at the same time has also walked the talk in taming inflation as well as shoring up its foreign exchange reserves to respectable highs and ensuring that the GDP is well over 8%.

Addressing reporters here on Monday, Shobha said GDP which was 7.40% in 2014 had touched 8.59% in 2015. Likewise, the foreign institutional investor inflow in to India has touched $55 billion in 2015 as against $15 billion, she said, adding that the inflation has dipped from a high of 11.2% in 2012 to a more manageable 4.87%. The recent hike in crude oil prices has negated the early reductions offered in prices of motor spirit and diesel, she averred.

Noting that influx of immigrants from Bangladesh in to India was always an issue that the BJP flagged, Shobha said the passage of the Bangla Border Bill by both houses of the parliament is a historic step forward in ensuring that India’s security concerns on this front is met. The Lok Sabha showing rare unanimity, passed the Constitution (119th Amendment) Bill to allow the operationalization of the 1974 India-Bangladesh Land Boundary agreement on May 7.

Keeping in mind need to foster the federal structure of the nation, Shobha said NDA government has agreed to raise the share of state governments’ in central revenues devolved to them from 32% to 42%. Karnataka as a result of this gesture stands to gain Rs 10,000 crore annually each year from year on from the current Rs 15,000 crore to Rs 25,000 crore, she said, adding over the next three years, Karnataka will gain an additional Rs 30,000 crore for its development.

The passage of the bill on black money is a further resolve of the union government to deal with those who stash their ill-gotten wealth in tax havens abroad, she said, adding the government will also find its way to convince the critics of the Land Bill to see the government point of view. The bill has presently been referred to a joint parliamentary committee of which Shobha is a member. The committee has sought the opinion of common man and stakeholders on the legislation.
