Mangalore, Aug 18, 2014: H Kumar appointed by union ministry of petroleum and natural gas, taken charge as managing director of Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL), a subsidiary of ONGC. Kumar took over from Vishnu Agrawal, director finance, who held additional charge as managing director from August 1, post superannuation of P P Upadhya.

Prior to this, Kumar was executive director, corporate strategy and planning at (HPCL).   Kumar is a mechanical engineer from Calicut University, trained in advanced management strategies by IIM Kolkata, brings over 3 decades of professional experience across the entire gamut of petroleum functions while serving in one of India’s  oil major HPCL. He has held key positions in different verticals and diverse functional streams of corporate strategy, retail services and operations, projects and pipelines and LPG projects and is credited with many benchmarks in the course of his service – whether it be in the construction and commissioning of the 356 kilometres Mangalore-Bangalore Pipeline (MBPL) or for the engineering and construction of the Mangalore LPG Import Facility (MLIF) project ( a first in industry)  and the  HPCL Marketing Terminal for evacuation of MRPL products at Mangalore or the 44 TMTPA LPG plant, at Chakan, Pune.

Kumar’s forte is concept to commissioning for which he draws on his intuitive and fact-based understanding of technology combined with visionary thinking;  and this  helps translate ideas into actionable initiatives and results on ground.

Kumar’s track record has stamped him an Industry expert in projects and pipelines. He has also blazed a trail in HPCL’s Retail strategy and forecourt standardization programme.

His strategic thinking, innovative solutions and visionary business practices created Industry firsts, and increased customer confidence in HPCL retail outlet chain across the country. He conceptualized the   NANO (No Automation No Operation) programme to ensure quality and quantity of fuels dispensed through the Retail Outlets chain, supervised the large scale roll out of Retail Automation through Mission Control Tool, introduced technology driven tamper proof mechanisms in Dispensing Units in Retail Outlets and Bank Agnostic switch at the forecourt payment terminal (in the Retail Outlet) for credit card applications and initiated changes to improve network productivity. The output of the NANO programme even today is an industry benchmark and has been included as a parameter in the MoU signed with union government by Oil Marketing Companies.

His involvement and contribution in the best-in-class Retail Visual Identity of HPCL’s Retail chain with its red and blue logo colours was noticed and lauded by all in the Industry. Though customer delight and living up to a brand promise were at the heart of all these initiatives, Kumar demonstrated his concern for the environment too, when he introduced Stage II Vapour Recovery System for a cleaner environment and Solar PV systems at  HPCL’s Retail Outlets.

No surprise that many accolades and recognition came his way, notable amongst them being the ’Marketing Professional of the Year Award (PSU Category)" at the CMO Asia Awards 2011 for Excellence in Branding & Marketing, in Singapore.

Based on his track record, HPCL Management found him fit for many excellent knowledge interventions including courses at IIM Kolkata and the HBS Training Centre at Mumbai.

At the time of his being appointed as MD, MRPL, Shri Kumar was one of the key leaders for HPCL’s Vision 2030 and was driving the implementation strategy. As Executive Director – Corporate Strategy and Planning, (CS&P) he also successfully steered many historic tie-ups: a JVC with GOR for a 9 MMTPA Refinery-cum-Petrochemical complex at Barmer, Rajasthan, a JVC with M/s S P Ports for 5 MMTPA LNG regassification terminal at Chhara, Gujarat, and was instrumental is setting up the Economic Planning & Optimisation (EPO) group for driving profitability at HPCL.
