Mangalore: Tricksters use KBC bait to dupe man of Rs 70,000

 

Mangalore, 25 Feb 2013 (TOI): Tricksters using the USP of popular TV game show KBC took a city based tailor for a ride leaving him poorer by Rs 70,000. According to a complaint lodged by Yashodar, 30, resident of Ullal, who works at Karangalpady in the city with Mangalore North (Bunder) police station, he received a message purportedly from KBC stating he had won Rs 50 lakh in the game show and that he should pay Rs 1 lakh to claim the prize.

 

The tricksters who sent message to Yashodar’s cell number asked him to pay Rs 1 lakh in four installments and Yashodar paid three installments amount to Rs 70,000 - Rs 25,000 in first installment, Rs 20,000 in second and Rs 25,000 in third to accounts numbers of a private bank, operational in Bihar and Kolkata. Bank authorities, police said warned him not to do so, but Yashodar reportedly told them that money was for his ailing relative.

 

Yashodar, got suspicious about the messages that he was receiving after having remitted the third installment, police said, adding that he has since lodged a complaint of cheating. Police suspect that Yashodar did not want anyone to get wind of the fact that he was due to receive a huge sum as prize money and his sense of expectation of easy money made him oblivious to the warnings given by the bank authorities. Police are investigating the matter.
