Mangalore: Horticulture show at Kadri Park from March 30

  • 2-day fest to also showcase vegetable carvings and sand sculpture

 

Mangalore, 28 March 2012: Horticulture department in association with district administration, zilla panchayat, Mangalore City Corporation, Athma sanchalana committee, Siri horticulture association will organise horticulture show, at Kadri Park from March 30 to April 1.

 

Addressing a press meet here on Wednesday, Deputy Director Dr Nanda said flowers arranged on the theme of festivals of India will be the main attraction at the venue.

 

About five festivals have been chosen for the arrangement. They are Christmas, Ramzan, Deepavali, Holi and Sankranthi.

 

Vegetable carvings, sand sculpture and pottery activities will be added attraction along with ‘Aharotsava.’

 

As many as 29 flowers including marigold, ‘salvia,’ ‘pinks,’ ‘petunia,’ anthurium, ‘gerbera,’ flocks,’ dalia, ‘gladiola, ‘celosia flower’ sun flower and others will be part of display while about 17 ornamental plants like coleus will also be on display.

 

Vegetables grown in pots like ‘Basella rubra’ (basale) both in red and green, beetroot, raddish, green chilly, cauliflower, beans, tomato, yard long beans, bitter gourd, brinjal, spinach, ridge gourd, bottle gaurd, cucumber, pumpkin, snake gourd, okra (red and green colour), water melon, cow pea, gherkin, cabbage, khol rabi will welcome visitors. An official said that the vegetables are grown using ‘hatti gobbara,’ vermi compost, potash and phospate.

 

As many as 90 medicinal plants including ‘Gulu mavu,’ ‘yellow bamboo,’ ‘Naga sampige,’ ‘Anavu,’ ‘Pacholi,’ ‘Holenekki,’ ‘Alathikai,’ ‘Daddala,’ ‘Patranjeeva,’ ‘Ollekudi,’ ‘Hippali,’ ‘nekki,’ ‘salu doopa,’ ‘Arthala,’ ‘Kempu utharane,’ ‘Renje,’ ‘Ramaoathre,’ ‘Doddapathre,’ ‘Sirihonne’ and ‘Aadu soge’ are also part of the show.

 

Stalls related to farm equipment, medicinal plants, nursery, farm produce grown by farmers will be put up at the venue. After the show, discount sale of ornamental plants will be held. An expo on oil palm will also be held.

 

Assembly Deputy Speaker N Yogish Bhat will inaugurate the show while Zilla Panchayat President K T Shailaja Bhat will preside.

 

Along with horticulture show, there will be cultural programmes in the evening. This include fancy dress for school children on March 30 and mimicry by Pattabhiram Sullia on March 31. 

 

‘Aaharotsava’

Dakshina Kannada Hotels and Restaurants Association will be organising ‘Aahar- 2012,’ second international food carnival in Mangalore, at Kadri Park on March 30, March 31 and April 1 from 4.30 pm to 5.30 pm.

 

Addressing a separate press meet, Association Vice President Swarnasundar said the visitors of flower show can taste North Indian, South Indian, Chinese, Italian and Russian food. Ice cream, juice, chats, sweet dishes, bakery products will also be available at the venue.

 

Simon Exhibitors of Bangalore will be organising ‘Gruhashobha,’ an exhibition of home appliances.

 

“There will be cooking competition for women and veg fruits carving contest for all,” he added.
