Udupi, 19 September 2011: Opposing the price rise on Petrol and LPG gas by the central government, Udupi Nagarika Samiti conducted protest in a distinctive way.  The Samiti members tied the Omni car to the hand cart and pulled it and along with tens of bicycle riders they went on a procession through the city to make an attempt to draw the attention of the people against the government.

In a procession they gathered at Gandhi circle near the service bus stand and conducted protest there. Addressing the gathering Chief Secretary of the Samiti Nityananda Volakadu expressed his anger on the central government who is rising the price and though there is provision for the state government to reduce the price they are not reducing it.

Nityananda Volakadu said that, they will not be submitting any petition to the Deputy Commissioner or any other Officers. In the city there are so many protests were conducted and petitions have been submitted, but whether it reaches to the real concerned or not is doubtful, therefore the people have no other option but to come down to the streets and conduct protest, he said.

The Congress Party or BJP are not opening their mouth on the difficulties caused to the people by this rise of the prices on Petrol and LPG, as their governments are in power in the center and state. The non-participation of the general public in this protest makes one to doubt that may be this rise in the prices have caused any problem to the people of Udupi!

Prices of fuels like LPG, Petrol, Diesel, Kerosene, and even coal will keep increasing in the world market, and no procession by anybody is going to make a difference. The agitations should focus on demanding to reduce layers of taxes collected by five tiers of our administration. We are THE HIGHEST indirectly taxed country. Such high rate of indirect taxation has stunted our development: higher costs mean lower demand. The other sides of the story is the leakage in tax collection is high, wasteful expenditure of tax rupees is phenomenal. WE ARE A WASTEFUL NATION. Look at our roads: they need repairs every year! If our roads were not like what they are, our fuel consumption for transportation could be halved. Look at our cars: what mileage do we get? Half the world level? Look at our traffic jams in cities, due to lanes and pavements taken over by hawkers, shopkeepers, urchins and huts. Imagine our traffic moved in the day at same speed as at night, the fuel saved. The correction lies in so many spheres with so many people..alas, will we ever?
