Udupi: 24 Hour Control Room Established for Rain Disaster Management

Udupi, 03 June 2011: Udupi Deputy Commissioner Dr. M. T. Reju has given instructions to open control rooms at the offices of the respective Taluk Offices, Asst. Commissioner’s Office and Deputy Commissioner’s Office, capable of performing 24 hours duty, to gather information on the rain flood and disasters. He was speaking in his presidential address, during the meeting held at D.C. Office on Thursday, on the precautionary measures to be taken to face any natural disasters due to rain.

 

He told that at Grama Panchayaths, the details to be collected of the persons having country boats and also the mobile numbers of swimmers, which is to be listed and submitted to Taluk Office and D.C. Office. He also gave instructions to the Fishing Department Officers to inspect the boats belonging to the Fire Brigade Department and Red Cross, and make a report whether it is feasible to install motors to these boats.

 

 

Also, he mentioned that, while the National Highway widening work is in progress, it is observed that the soil deposited around the electric poles seems to have collapsed and gave instructions to the Officers to organize joint inspection of these spots by Mescom and National Highway Authority.

 

District Health Officer informed in the meeting that all kind of medicines for the usual sicknesses during the rainy season are kept in stock in sufficient quantity. Also, the teams have been organized to give information to people on the dangers of Malaria, Dengue and to take necessary precautions to prevent it.
 

 

Officers from Red Cross and Home Guard spoke and explained on the Boat, life jacket, rescue teams which are available with them for rescue operation. Deputy Director of Public Education Board informed that, to open Ganji centres during rain flood, already 22 schools have been identified.

 

On this occasion Gokuldas Nayak from Udupi Municipality informed in the meeting that the drainage gutters of Gundibail and Kalsanka have been already cleaned and a control room has been established in the Municipality to perform work in 24 hour basis, he said.

 

In the meeting District Police Senior Officer Dr. Ravikumar, Additional D.C. Prabhakar, Municipality President Kiran Kumar, Jilla Panchayath Cheif Officer D. Pranesh Rao, Kundapura Sub Divisional Officer Dr. Sadashiva Prabhu and Tashildar were present.

Setting up a command and control center(C C) of administrative structure for crisis and disaster management is half the way traveled, and is rightly headed and directed by the DC. The C C should never fall into the hands of the political leadership for operational matters. I now hope that the GP level officers follow the C
