Glasgow 2014 - XX Commonwealth Games

The roots of the Commonwealth go back over 140 years, when most of the Commonwealth nations and territories were part of the British Empire. After World War II the empire was gradually dismantled and the Commonwealth came in to its present form 1949, when it was agreed that all member nations should be free and equal to each other. This focus on equality has helped the Commonwealth tackle issues such as racism, poverty and decolonization.. [By Francis Saldanha]

Ignite The Spark-There is no Stupid question…..

Ignite The Spark-There is no Stupid question…..

A year back in Dubai I met a person who is a well known name in the field of education in India. As discussion went on I asked her about the one thing that hinders growth in children in academics. I was bit surprised with the answer she gave me. She said “it is the shyness in children to raise questions”. I was under the impression that present generation is more extrovert and don’t hesitate like we did. As discussion continued further I asked her whether the system..[By Vincent DSa]

As Iraq Burns, World feels the heat (Final Part)

The 9/11 suicide bombers of Osama Bin Laden’s Al-Qaida were mostly Saudis. But, it is Saddam’s Iraq which had to bear American wrath. The Bush administration invaded Iraq accusing it of possessing and using weapons of mass destruction (WMD) against its own citizens. The defeat and UN-imposed economic sanctions including embargo on oil exports weakened Saddam government. Armed secessionist movements by ethnic Kurds in the north and Shia in the south.. As Iraq burns, world feels the heat - Part 1

Iraq is in war with itself. It is a divided house. A house divided against self cannot stand. Iraq will fall. The burning precedes the fall. As it burns, world feels the heat. India cannot escape its share. Iraq is in our neighbourhood. It is in a region of great strategic importance to us in safeguarding our long-term national interests.. [By Philip Mudartha]

Fr. Joseph Mathias S.J.: Pioneer in Integral Human Formation for Clergy and Religious

In a fast changing world, when vocations to priesthood and religious life are practically on decline and amidst the criticism that a number of priests and religious are not in sync with the requirements of the community in particular and society in general, when there is a widespread feeling among many religious and laity that those who have dedicated to the service of Christ and faithful lack empathy with the common people as a result of various factors, the Jesuit priest from Shirva has become a pioneer in Integral Human Formation for Clergy and Religious. The Metro and Train stations, BEST bus terminals, Bridges and Skywalks

The Metro and Train stations, BEST bus terminals, Bridges and Skywalks

I took a near empty bus to Andheri train station. The road trip took 16 minutes. The metro-rail would have taken 4 minutes. The BEST fare was Rs10, which is significant for a 3.0 Km distance. I got off on Gokhale Bridge adjacent to Andheri Train station and studied the linkages between BEST bus terminal, train station and metro-rail station. I was disappointed is the kindest comment I have. Even as we have a world class metro system, our mass transit managers still work..[By Philip Mudartha]

Travelling has been one of my favourite pastime not only when I was working in Kuwait, but more so after my retirement and settling down in Mangalore. While working in Kuwait, I had visited practically all of the Gulf Countries and even Europe. After having retired and settled down in Mangalore, my interest in travelling reignited and after the busy schedule of covering pictorial reports of campaigning and election...[By John Tauro]

We believe in 3Gs: Gold, God and Gupshup

Gold is our national obsession. Gold is a fashion and fascinating to us. We are obsessed with gold since generations. Gold makes and mars our most intimate relationships too. The god price has risen sharply in the decade up to mid-2011. Its popularity has risen too concurrently. That is difficult to understand, explain and rationalize. [By Philip Mudartha]
