Delhi tops road deaths in 2015

Chennai, Bengaluru follow suit

New Delhi, 28  May 2016: Roads in Delhi, Chennai and Bengaluru are India’s worst killing tracks as these cities witnessed the maximum number of deaths due to road accidents in 2015, an official report says.

 

Nearly 1,622 people were killed in Delhi, followed by 886 in Chennai and 713 in Bengaluru.  

 

Mumbai witnessed the highest number of road accidents (23,468), while Delhi had the highest number of deaths. 

 

In terms of number of people who were injured in these accidents, Delhi reported 8,258 cases in 8,085 accidents, while in Chennai  7,320 people were injured in 7,328 accidents, and in Bengaluru 4,057 people were injured in 4,834 accidents.

 

About 54.1% of the people killed in road accidents were in the 15 to 34 age group, says the “Road Accidents In India-2015” report prepared by the Transport Research Wing of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. 

 

Also, 1,374 accidents and 400 deaths are reported every day, which further translates into 57 accidents and loss of 17 lives on an average every hour in the country.

 

Two-wheelers accounted for the highest share in road accidents. Their share in total road accidents increased from 26.3% in 2013 to 27.3% in 2014 and 28.8% in 2015. 

 

After two-wheelers, the share of cars, jeeps and taxis went up from 22.2% in 2013 to 22.7% in 2014 and 23.6% in 2015.

 

The time-slot with highest rate of road accidents was between 3 pm-6pm and 6pm-9pm, accounting for 17.5% (87,819) and 17.3 per cent (86,836) of the accidents, respectively. During the same slots in 2014, the rate of accidents was 17.3% (84,436) and 17% (83,254), respectively.

 

Another chilling fact is that the highest number of road accidents were witnessed in May (46,247) followed by March (42,842), thus contributing 9.2% and 8.5% of total accidents month wise, respectively, throughout 2015. 

 

During the period, 13 top states in terms of lives lost were Tamil Nadu (69,059), Maharashtra (63,805), Madhya Pradesh (54,947), Karnataka (44,011), Kerala (39,014), Uttar Pradesh (32,385), Andhra Pradesh (24,258), Rajasthan (24,072), Gujarat (23,183), Telangana (21,252), Chhattisgarh (14,446), West Bengal (13,208) and Haryana (11,174). 

 

These states together accounted for 86.7% of all road accidents in the country.In overall numbers, the total number of road accidents increased by 2.5% from 4,89,400 in 2014 to 5,01,423 in 2015.
