New Delhi, 19 May 2015: Finance minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday slammed Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government, saying "people want governance, not controversy".

"Those who are ruling Delhi don’t want to govern," Arun Jaitley said.

"The people of Delhi experimented with a new party in the elections, but it is a very costly experiment because governance is not their political agenda," Jaitley said.

He was speaking at Delhi BJP’s executive committee meeting. In an apparent reference to various controversies surrounding the AAP government, particularly the tussle between Kejriwal and Jung, Jaitley said people of Delhi want governance and the ruling dispensation must understand it.

"Whatever is happening in Delhi in last few months, it seems coming days may be be painful. The AAP government came following a huge mandate. They should understand their responsibilities. People want governance and not controversy. So they should understand their responsibilities and fulfil people’s expectations," he said.

Jaitley said Delhi could have been turned into a global city as it has great opportunities for business and tourism.

Vowing not to surrender in the turf war between AAP government and lieutenant-governor Najeeb Jung, Deputy CM Manish Sisodia said that "roles are defined. Delhi has a government, not the President’s rule".

"Everyone should simply read the Constitution," Sisodia said.

Meanwhile, President Pranab Mukherjee is likely to meet LG Najeeb Jung in the afternoon today, Times Now reported.

The tussle between CM and LG had turned bizarre on Monday.

When principal secretary Anindo Majumdar - who was stripped of his charge by Kejriwal but reinstated by the LG on Saturday - turned up for work at the Secretariat on Monday, he found his room locked. The AAP government had given his responsibilities to the CM’s principal secretary, Rajendra Kumar.

With bureaucrats caught in the crossfire, governance has come to a standstill. The Delhi government is now heading for a direct fight with the Centre with the CM to seek clarity on powers from President Pranab Mukherjee at a meeting scheduled for Tuesday evening.

Kejriwal is also planning to draw Prime Minister Narendra Modi into the conflict by writing a letter to him. This could mark the beginning of a Centre-state battle over full statehood, a demand that Kejriwal has been making ever since he took charge in February.
