Lok Sabha resumes, Giriraj Singh regrets making derogatory comment on Sonia Gandhi

New Delhi, 20 Apr 2015: The second half of the budget session began on Monday with reconvening of the Lok Sabha. 

 

As the Lok Sabha session started, Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia raised the issue of comments made by Union minister Giriraj Singh on Sonia Gandhi and Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Muslims. 

 

Clarifying on Giriraj Singh’s remarks, parliamentary affairs minister Venkiah Naidu said,"the issue raised by Scindia is an important issue. Nobody in the government supports Giriraj Singh’s remarks." 

 

"Giriraj Singh is a minister and the PM heads the council of ministers. PM Modi has to speak on the issue," Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said. 

 

Amid the uproar, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan adjourned the Lok Sabha till 11:45am.

 

As the Lok Sabha resumed, Union minister Giriraj Singh expressed his regrets for making derogatory comment against Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

 

"I did not mean to offend anyone by my remarks," Giriraj Singh said in the Lok Sabha. 

 

As the budget session of Parliament resumes on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he looks forward to a productive session, filled with constructive debates on several issues. 

 

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, PM Narendra Modi said: "I have faith in this session. I am confident second half of session will also see high level of constructive discussions." 

 

The PM also thanked opposition parties for their cooperation in the last session. 

 

"I’m grateful to opposition parties for their cooperation in previous Parliament session. I hope for similar cooperation of all parties in this session," the PM said. "Parliament session begins today. I look forward to a productive session, filled with constructive debates on several issues," PM Modi said in a tweet on Monday morning. 

 

Parliamentary affairs minister Venkaiah Naidu said that we are "hoping for a meaningful and constructive session." 

 

"I appeal to all parties to debate, discuss and then decide. Let us not have any disruption," Naidu said.
