Mumbai, 01 June 2017: Nandini KR of Karnataka bagged the top rank in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) 2016 exams, followed by Anmol Sher Singh Bedi and Gopalakrishna Ronanki, at second and third place, a statement from the Commission said.
The written exam for the civil services exam was held in December 2016 followed by interviews for personality test between March and May this year.
A total of 1,099 candidates have been recommended for appointment besides a consolidated Reserve List of 172 candidates.
Results can be accessed on the UPSC website. The marks will be available on the website within 15 days from the date of declaration of result.
"It is like a dream come true. I always wanted to be an IAS officer," she told PTI from the National Academy of Customs, Excise and Narcotics in Faridabad, where she is undergoing probation.
"I put in a lot of effort. After getting selected in the IRS in 2014, I had taken the exam again in 2015 but could not crack it. I took the test again and topped it. It is a wonderful experience," she says.
Nandini got 849 rank in the 2014 civil services exam and was alloted IRS (Customs and Central Excise).
Holding a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) degree from M S Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bengaluru, Nandini had Kannada literature as her optional subject.
She belongs to the Other Backward Class (OBC) category.
Anmol Sher Singh Bedi secured the second rank. He is an engineering graduate in computer science from BITS, Pilani.
The top 25 candidates comprise 18 men and 7 women.
A total of 1,099 candidates (846 men and 253 women), including 500 in General category, 347 belonging to Other Backward Class, 163 from Scheduled Caste and 89 from Scheduled Tribe, have been recommended for appointment to various central government services, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) said. They include 44 physically handicapped candidates (22 orthopedically handicapped; seven visually challenged and 15 hearing impaired).
There are 220 other candidates in the waiting list.
A total of 1,209 vacancies were notified by the government, which were to be filled through the civil services examination 2016.
The civil services examination is conducted by the UPSC annually in three stages - preliminary, mains and interviews - to select candidates for the elite Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS), among others.
MoS PMO to felicitate civil services exam toppers
Union minister Jitendra Singh will felicitate toppers of the civil services examination. "We plan to felicitate the top 20 rank holders in a day or two," Singh told PTI. He said the programme is a continuation of the practice of interacting with the toppers ever since this government came to power. Singh, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), also congratulated Nandini K R, who has topped the examination.

Singh said in the past few years it had been noticed that it was invariably the female candidates who were the toppers of the exam.
"Also, the candidates from militancy affected states like Jammu and Kashmir are now regularly appearing among the top 25 candidates. This year too, Bilal Mohiuddin Bhat has got tenth rank.
