Abu Dhabi, 8 May 2013: Ragamalika is a cultural organization of Abu Dhabi has always been organizing concerts with a difference. The 2-day music festival at Abu Dhabi featured the flamboyant Rajhesh Vaidhya, the highly talented Trichur Brothers and the constant innovator TM Krishna.  It was a trible treat for music lover of Abu Dhabi thronged the Sudanese Club for all the three concerts and enjoyed them thoroughly.

While Shree Rajhesh attracted the audience with his breath taking display of speed and talent on Thursday evening, the Trichur Brothers concert gave the classical music lovers a rich feast by way of a “ Sampradaya kutcheri “ on Friday morning. This was followed by Shree. TM Krishna’s concert in the evening who took the crowd to a different level with his unusual style of rendering.  It was a beautiful musical journey for the music lovers from entertainment to spiritual bliss.

It all began on Thursday, 2nd May at the Sudanese Club wherein “ Kalaimamani “ Shree. Rajhesh Vaidhya played on the electric veena with his equally proficient percussion artists Shree. Mohanaraman and Shree. Sri Ganesh on the Mrudangam,

Shree N. Subramanian on the ghatam and Shree. Paramasivan on the Kanjira The concert started with a Gambhiranattai varnam composed by Dr Bala Murali Krishna. This unconventional Varnam rendered at a breath taking pace by Shree Rajhesh Vaidhya got the audience rocking. It was followed by the pleasing Vatapi Ganapatim in raga Hamsadhwani. The haunting Tygaraja kriti  followed by many other ragas beautifully rendered by Shree Rahhesh Vaidhya and received huge round of applause and appreciation from the audience.

Friday morning saw the Trichur Brothers Shree. Ram Kumar Mohan and Shree. Sri Krishna Mohan presented a grand musical concert accompanied by Dr Hemalatha on the violin, Shree. Trichur Mohan (Father of Trichur Brothers) on the mrudangam and and Shree. Anirudh Athreya on the Kanjira.

From the word go, this was a concert steeped in Sampradaya showcasing the rich heritage of our Carnatic music. The opening piece was the lovely Kamas raga Dharu varnam Maathe Malayadwaja . This was followed by Siddhi Vinayakam in ragam Shanmukha Priya. Next was the grand ragam Varali which received the right treatment by the brothers. The rich paataanthara of the musical duo was evident when they presented the soulful Sahana krithi Vandanamu Raghu Nandana. “ We have heard this song from so many artists but today the rendition of this song brought tears to my eyes “: remarked a music lover . “The great bard of Tiruvayyaru Shree Tyagaraja would have been happy to hear this bhakti filled rendition of this song!” remarked another music lover.
He continued with many more ragas and wonderful rendition of classical songs that marveled the audience.

Finally on Friday evening, the program started with a homage by Team Mohana to Swami Vivekananda on his 150th Birth Anniversary in which 55 children participated from Dubai and Abudhabi . The entire life of Swamiji was depicted by way of a musical which had good music and colourful dances by the children. It was a pleasure to see them all clad in white and hear them sing the lovely soulful song Murtha Maheshwaram which was a tribute to this great inspiring leader .”

The evening saw a full house to listen to Shree T.M Krishna accompanied on the violin by Dr Hemalatha, mrudangam by Shree Arjun Kumar and Kanjira by Shree.Anirudh Athreya.

The concert began at a leisurely pace with the Begada raga kriti Va va Muruga va composed by Shree. Spencer VenuGopal. This pace was maintained throughout the concert. Shri TM Krishna demonstrated the different prayogas of the Madhyama in Begade ragam with unusual swara patterns.

The next song was Padavini in raga Salaga Bhairavi. His genius was there for all to see in the ease with which he sang fast paced swaras in this complicated ragam.

The violinist Dr Hemalatha accompanied him at every turn and was a listener s delight. Dr. T M Krishna with all his immense talent was extremely supportive of his co artists. It was like watching a movie where there were 4 heroes. Truly the meaning of the word concert was brought out by him.

Shree. Krishna started with a Bilahari alapana followed by Bhairavi, Shyama and Vasantha. The way in which he effortlessly shifted from one raga to the other by just oscillating on a single note like Daivatam and juggled constantly between all the 4 raga’s in fraction of seconds...this was a true show of his talent. Dr. Hemalatha showed her mettle by playing equally well. The lovely poetry of Subramania Bharathiyar came to light by the rendering of his song Suttum Vizhi sudar thaan Kannamma- a ragamalika. One could actually see the mythical.

All in all it was good music and an experience in which both the singer and the listener are transported to a world of joy- where no individuals exist. It is a world where no artist dominates rather the Sangitha (raga) and the Sahithya (kriti) are more important. All the 3 concerts at Abu Dhabi were truly enjoyable in this respect. Despite the tempting array of food in the dining hall with a variety ranging from Tasty Pulav to Gulob jamuns with ice cream, people thronged to hear the artists which were a feast to the ears. This is proof of the fact that good music does elevate the audience to an exalted level.

Kudos to Shree. Kumar & Team for organizing such a grand musical weekend and keeping the rich tradition of our cultural heritage alive.
