Mangaluru: Social activist Dr Edmond Fernandes thanks Om Prakash, DGP Karnataka
- Media Release
Mangaluru, 21 Jun 2015: Om Prakash, Director General of Police (DGP), Karnataka has directed all police stations, control rooms and officers to look into the needs of constables who guard the roads and other areas of public welfare.
In a letter dated to DGP on May 25, 2015, Dr Edmond Fernandes, medico-social activist and public health advocate raised the issue of constables who do not have the authority to impose fine on rule violators. He said with understaffed man-power and compromised level of law enforcement; it leaves the nation state decades behind others. He also urged the DGP to make provision for safe drinking water and timely snacks with access to clean sanitation facilities, failing which occupational diseases are going to advance earlier than necessary. Dr Edmond observed that with compromised air quality in cities like Bengaluru and fast developing cities like Mangaluru, it was imperative to wear masks while guarding public spaces and the roads.
In response to this letter, Om Prakash has directed all the police departments to take note of this and work towards this in the days to come. Ever since, Dr Edmond took up this matter with the DGP, he has been receiving ‘Thank you’ calls from different police stations, control rooms and officers for having focused on the needs of police men.
While thanking Om Prakash for his enlightened approach towards improving the police work force in the state, Dr Edmond said, ‘We need more officers like Om Prakash who bridge the divide between police and the public and work towards creating a better world for all to live in,’ said Dr Edmond.
