Belgaum: VTU Chess Team bags Silver in Int’l Inter-Varsity Chess Championship in Malaysia

Belgaum, 01 Feb 2014: The chess team of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), here won silver medal in eighteenth International inter-varsity chess championship held at University of Malaya, Kualalumpur, Malaysia from Thursday January 23 Tuesday January 28.


 
Chess team of VTU, Prachura (2100) Dayanand Sagar Engineering College, Bangalore, Gahan M G (2216), Viani Antonio D’Cunha and Vanessa D’Souza all from RV Engineering College, Bangalore finished second with excellent performance while Indonesia finished first. 

 


 
The medals with the certificates were awarded to the team in the grand prize distribution program on Tuesday January 28 by the vice-chancellor of University of Malaya.


 
Speaking on the occasion vice chancellor said, ‘India is doing extremely well in the world chess including all age categories.’  He congratulated the Indian VTU team for its excellent performance.  First time in VTU history its team has participated and won the silver medal in International inter-varsity chess championship. 


 
Gahan MG finished third place, Viani Antonio D’Cunha second place and Prachura PP finished sixth place in the open category while Vanessa D’Souza finished third place in women’s category in the same tournament. 


 
Earlier, the chess team of VTU consisting of Gahan MG, Prachura PP, Viani Antonio D’Cunha, Yashas D, Shreeshan S and Amit had won gold in the South Zone inter university chess championship held at SRM, Chennai from October 12 to October 17 2013 where 70  Universities had participated. They had also won bronze medal in All India Inter University chess championship held at Rahuri, Maharastra from January 12 to January 17.
